Lewis Gray is a consultant at Abelia Corporation. He is a software process
improvement coach and long-time teacher of software development standards.
He specializes in standards-based software project planning and in CMMI/CMM®
based software process assessment and improvement.
Dr. Gray has thirty years of experience introducing new technology, and 40,000 hours in software project management. He holds the Project Management Professional (PMP®) credential from the Project Management Institute. He has led process improvement efforts in large and small companies. He has designed, coded, and tested military software using structured and object-oriented development techniques. He has authored and led development of plans, software requirements specifications and software design documents in compliance with military standards.
He is the author of Guidebook to IEEE/EIA 12207 (ISBN 0-9719895-0-8) and many technical presentations and papers on process improvement and software engineering at international conferences. Thousands of people have attended his presentations or training on software life cycle standards and software process improvement at sites in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Australia.
Dr. Gray was a member of the Executive Committee that developed IEEE/EIA 12207 Software Life Cycle Processes. He was a leader in the development of J-STD-016 also, and MIL-STD-498, and he participated in the development of DOD-STD-2167A.
Dr. Gray has held senior management or technical positions at Northrop-Grumman IT (Logicon), TRW, GTE, and elsewhere. He has been a Visiting Scientist at the Software Engineering Institute.
He earned a Bachelor's degree in mathematics and the Ph.D. degree in the philosophy of science (specializing in technology assessment) from Indiana University, Bloomington where he also taught mathematics, technology assessment, and philosophy of science.
