README.TXT for PDF Version 2.0 of MIL-STD-498 for Windows 3.x MIL-STD-498, its 22 Data Item Descriptions (DIDs), the MIL-STD-498 Overview and Tailoring Guidebook, and the MIL-STD-498 Application and Reference Guidebook, were converted to Adobe's Portable Document Format (PDF) to provide a platform independent version of the standard and guidebooks. Adobe's free Acrobat Reader provides string search; print-on-demand; and text selection and paste into any word processor. For added value, the Bookmark and Link features of PDF were used to provide outline-oriented access and topic-oriented navigation for the PDF versions of the standard, its DIDs, the guidebooks as well as hypertext versions of the document indexes. The full list of files that comprise the MIL-STD-498 PDF Application is contained in the ROADMAP.PDF file. These PDF files may be used without restriction. If these files are redistributed, they must be kept together to ensure proper operation and information integrity for the next user. INSTALLATION ------------ 1. Choose or create a directory and copy the 498_WIN3.EXE self-extracting executable into it. Run the copied file in the chosen directory to extract the MIL-STD-498 PDF files. Keep all 35 PDF files together to ensure proper operation and information integrity. 2. Install Adobe's Acrobat Reader if it isn't already installed. The Reader is free and is available for Windows 3.x at the following: WWW http://www.adobe.com -- follow the Acrobat trail FTP ftp.adobe.com -- use the following directories /pub/adobe/Applications/Acrobat/Windows BBS 1-206-623-6983 -- follow the Acrobat trail in Files 3. The disk space needed for the MIL-STD-498 files and the Abode Acrobat Reader is approximately 10 Mbytes. OPERATION --------- Double-click on the ROADMAP.PDF file or open it within Reader. Click on the colored buttons to jump to the documents of interest. An explanation of the meaning of the different colors used in the PDF documents is contained on page 2 of the ROADMAP.PDF file. The file names are listed on pages 3 and 4 of the ROADMAP.PDF file. The PDF files have been password secured to prevent inadvertent changes to the text or notes. No password is required to open the files. The files can be viewed, text or graphics can be selected, and the files can be printed.
